In order to increase the consistency of technical documents, the Centre for Computational Linguistics developed COGRAM, a ``Controlled English'' grammar, based on a limited vocabulary range and a ``controlled'' syntax. Besides lexical and syntactic control strict rules concerning style, punctuation and layout are taken into account. Out of COGRAM we have developed ALCOGRAM, an algorithmically designed grammar the modules of which cover the main aspects of the process of controlled writing. ALCOGRAM can easily be integrated into NLP systems, especially style and grammar checkers and systems for the pre-editing of text input for machine-aided translation.
