Centre for Computational Linguistics: Projects
Time Span: 1991 - 1994

In this project two concepts from different fields of research are being tested for compatibility. On the one hand, there are the mechanisms for expressing inheritance relations that are developed within artificial intelligence and, more recently, within the object oriented paradigm for software engineering. On the other hand, there are the types of hyponymy in language use that have been described within the framework of cognitive linguistics. The main question is to which extent the former mechanisms are an adequate or promising instrument for modelling the latter phenomena. Put differently, the question is which constraints the linguistic data impose upon the formalisms for description. The project will result in an implementation.
This project was initiated in cooperation with the Centre for the Semantics of Grammar and the Lexicon (Departement Linguïstiek).
